Icon: St John the Theologian in Silence | S-17
Origin Central Russia
Period : circa 1700
Size : 31 x 27 cm
This rare icon represents St John the Theologian in Silence from his shoulders upwards in three quarter profile facing left. He touches his lips with the fingers of his right hand, a gesture symbolising silence. His finely painted face with the greyish beard expresses contemplation. In this icon St John’s silent spirituality is emphasized.
In the Orthodox Church St John the Evangelist is also called ‘the Theologian’, because of the mystical nature of his gospel, which is the most spiritual of the four gospels.  St John did not write a history in the modern sense of the word. He wanted to explore the spiritual background of the events and to expose the deeper meaning of Christ's words.
