The front side of the cross shows the crucified Christ in the centre, surrounded by scenes from the Passion rendered in high relief: the Anastasis on top, Christ carrying the Cross on the left arm, the Deposition from the Cross on the right arm, and the Lamentation below.

On the reverse, the cross shows medallions with engraved names of saints (Apostle St Andrew, St Gregory the Theologian, St Basil of Ancyra, St Makary the Great, St Ipaty, and St Ilya Muromets, of the Monastery of the Caves in Kiev), surrounded by floral motives. The relics of the saints are still in place, attached with wax to the wooden core of the cross.
