On the icon the archangels appear together in a circular composition above swirling clouds. They all wear ecclesiastical vestments and hold the bode staff. The two angels in the foreground support a medallion with the image of Christ Emmanuel. Large fiery red seraphims appears below.

The synaxis of the commander of the heavenly hosts, the archangel Michael and the other archangels was established at the Council of Laodicea (363-364 AD), where the worship of angels as gods and rulers of the world was condemned and denounced as heretical, but their proper veneration was affirmed.
